ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS An Attempt to Pin Down the Instability Domain of Long-Period Variables
نویسنده
چکیده
The period-luminosity relation of Miras and semiregular variables in the Large Magellanic Cloud and in the Galaxy is used to locate their instability domain in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We take advantage of the considerable width in luminosity of the relation at given period to assign masses to the observed long-period variables using stellar models on the the asymptotic giant branch and nonadiabatic pulsation computations. We study the sensitivity to chemical abundance of the position of the instability region on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The mass function of the longperiod variables along the AGB is discussed for Galactic and LMC variables. Finally, we contribute to the dispute on the pulsation mode of Miras and lend support to the view that, for most of the Mira variables, the pulsation in the fundamental mode is more likely.

The Effect of Solar Particles in the Choice of Alloy Shielding in a Satellite
The damages and logical failures in dierent parts of a satellite may occur during a solar event, when a bulk of solar energetic particles approaching the Earth. During solar events, these particles may cause extensive damages which are even permanent (hard errors). A way of damage reduction is designing a proper coating as the fuselage. As protons are the major component of solar particles and ...
متن کاملTime Delays in Cosmic Ray Propagation
Cosmic Rays (CR) travel at speeds essentially indistinguishable from the speed of light. However whilst travelling through magnetic fields, both regular and turbulent, they are delayed behind the light since they are usually charged particles and their paths are not linear. Those delays can be so long that they are an impediment to correctly identifying sources which may be variable in time. Fu...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Study of an unbiased sample of B stars observed with Hipparcos: the discovery of a large amount of new Slowly Pulsating B Stars Abstract. We present a classiication of 267 new variable B-type stars discovered by Hipparcos. We have used two diierent classiication schemes and they both result in only a few new Cephei stars, a huge number of new Slowly Pulsating B stars,...
متن کاملHalting planet migration by photoevaporation from the central source
The recent discovery of Jupiter-mass planets orbiting at a few AU from their stars compliments earlier detections of massive planets on very small orbits. The short period orbits strongly suggest that planet migration has occurred, with the likely mechanism being tidal interactions between the planets and the gas disks out of which they formed. The newly discovered long period planets, together...
